Coaching Staff

Kory Swart
Assistant Coach (8th Season)

Swart begins his eighth season on Cornell's track and field staff in 2012, coaching the distance runners.

Swart earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics from the University of Northern Iowa in 1996 and received a master's from UNI in 1998. He was an accomplished two-sport athlete at UNI, competing in cross country and track and field. In track and field, Swart was a three-time all-Missouri Valley Conference performer in the distance medley relay and also earned all-conference recognition once in the mile run. He was a member of three MVC championship track and field teams and one conference team title in cross country.

Swart is a 1992 graduate of Belmond-Klemme High School, where he was a key figure on two conference championship track and field teams. He ran on Belmond-Klemme's state championship 4x800 relay as a junior and was state runner-up in the 800 and 1600 his senior season. Swart also placed fourth at the state cross country championships his senior year.

Swart is an assistant professor in mathematics at Kirkwood Community College. He and his wife, Conni, have two daughters, Laura and Kiersten.

Dan Schofer
Assistant Coach (6th Season)

Schofer enters his sixth year as Cornell College head coach of men's and women's cross country and assistant coach of men's and women's track and field in 2011-2012.

A native of Wilmette, Ill., Schofer graduated magna cum laude from Carleton College in Northfield, Minn., in 2000 with a major in biology. He earned an MS degree in exercise physiology from the University of Oregon in December 2001. While at Oregon, he taught running and weight training courses in the physical education department, worked as a teaching assistant in the exercise physiology department, and competed for Team Eugene, a running club active in the Pacific Northwest.

Cornell's distance runners enjoyed an outstanding year in 2010-2011. Andrew Tobben won his second straight IIAC title in cross country, as he led the Rams to a third-place team finish for the second straight year. Chase Nowak and Kirkwood Donavin also earned All-IIAC honors. Tobben qualified for Nationals and led three of his teammates to All-Region honors, as the Rams finished a program-best sixth place at the NCAA Central Regional Championships, barely missing a team bid to the NCAA National Championships. Tobben (7th in the Region), was followed closely by Donavin (12th), Nowak (15th), and Adam Rooyakkers (33rd).

Donavin was named the IIAC's most valuable performer at the indoor track championships, as he won the mile and anchored Cornell to dominating victories in both the distance medley and 4x800 relays. He went on to place third at the NCAA National Championships in the mile, where he set a Cornell record of 4:11.02. Donavin won both the 800 and 1500 meters at the outdoor championships, and the 4x800 relay team, this time anchored by Rooyakkers, won the Rams' third straight title in the event. Tobben and Nowak each earned All-IIAC honors and scored in two events at the meet, and Rooyakkers placed second behind Donavin in the 800, as Cornell scored 63 points in five distance events at the IIAC Championships.

Cornell's women set a program record by placing 11th of 27 teams at the NCAA Central Regional Championships. The team had a gap of just 24 seconds between its No. 1-5 runners. On the track, Allie Jagielo set a school record (10:30) in the 3k, good for fifth at the IIAC Indoor Championships and just ahead of teammate Elise Mead (10:32). The Rams' 4x800 meter relay set an indoor school record (9:52) with just one senior in the line-up. Mead and Jagielo both broke the previous school record in the 5k, running 18:20 and 18:24, respectively. Mead also set a new Cornell mark in the 10k (38:15) and placed fourth at the IIAC Championships. Jagielo earned All-IIAC honors by placing second in the 3,000 meter steeplechase.
The men's and women's teams enter the 2011-2012 year with solid recruiting classes and high expectations. Both squads return five of their top seven from last fall's cross country teams.
Schofer came to Cornell from Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn., where he served for four years as assistant coach of men's and women's cross country and track and field. During his time at Rhodes, he helped coach 40 individual all-conference performances, one team and nine individual conference championships, one team and seven individual NCAA Championships qualifiers, and four NCAA All-American performances.

Schofer also served as assistant coach for the Carleton women's track and field program for the 2002 winter and spring seasons.

During his junior and senior years at Carleton, Schofer captained both the cross country and track and field teams. Additionally, he earned three most-improved awards, several all-conference citations, and qualified as an individual for the NCAA Cross Country Championships in the fall of 1999. Schofer has continued to train and compete at a high level since graduating from college.

Schofer has USA Track and Field Level II coaching certification and is a member of the US Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

"I have high expectations for the student-athletes in our program, in terms of discipline, hard work, sportsmanship, and citizenship. Participating in cross country and track at Cornell is one of the most demanding aspects of our students' college experience, but there is no question that it is also one of the most rewarding. From our fastest to our slowest runners, all members of our program enjoy the lifelong bonds of friendships formed and the satisfaction gained from working hard and improving as part of a competitive team."

Schofer and his wife, Marie, a competitive distance runner herself who works in Cornell's office of admission, live in Mount Vernon.

Chad Compton
Assistant Coach (6th Season)

Compton, a native of Zimmerman, Minn., is in his sixth season as assistant coach at his alma mater.

Compton earned four letters each in cross country, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field before graduating from Cornell in 2006 with a bachelor's degree in physics. He earned All-Iowa Conference honors in 2006 in the indoor 800-meter run, placing third with a time of 1 minute, 57.46 seconds.

Compton was named Cornell's MVP in outdoor track and field in 2006 and was the most improved runner for the Rams in cross country in 2004. He was named all-conference in 2003 as a member of the third-place distance medley relay team in indoor track and field.

James Wohrley
Assistant Coach (2nd Season)

Wohrley, a 2010 Cornell graduate and standout track and field athlete with the Rams, enters his second season as assistant coach at his alma mater.

Wohrley was a two-time all-American, two-time Iowa Conference champion and six-time all-IIAC honoree. He placed eighth in the pentathlon at the 2010 NCAA Division III Indoor Championships, followed by a sixth-place national outdoor finish in the decathlon. Wohrley was the IIAC decathlon champion in 2010 and claimed the conference pentathlon crown in 2009. He is the school-record holder for points scored in both the pentathlon (3,605) and the decathlon (6,959).
